NEXT GEN AT WORK! ALEX JOINS FOR A PLACEMENT DAY

05 August 2025

It’s always exciting to welcome the next generation into the workplace so our Director, Jason Hercock was pleased to be joined by his 14-year-old nephew, Alex for a work placement day.

Alex shadowed Jason for a typical ‘day in the life’ of a Chartered Surveyor, and wrote this report about his activities…

“We started the day in Rugby to do a rent review inspection for a new client. We completed a full inspection of the three-storey building, which has an existing estate agent tenant, so we had to make sure not to disturb their work. My favourite bit was using the laser to measure the spaces; I had no idea this was how this is done.

“We then went to Market Harborough for a meeting with the landlord and contractors on a property that is going to be upgraded. The first and second floors are becoming an office hub so it was interesting to hear how the specification is agreed and what work will be undertaken before the new occupiers move in.

“After lunch, we met one of Jason’s retained clients to view an office in Market Harborough they are looking to acquire. We walked through the property, talking through its features, benefits and the potential work required to make it more marketable and a good investment.

“In the afternoon, I got to fly the drone to take photos of stock properties for the photo library, so images for the website and social media stay up to date.

“Finally, it was back to the Wells McFarlane office to meet the rest of the team. This was my first time in an office environment and although it was what I was expecting, it was cool to see. All the activities made me realise that while you can have an ‘office’ job, the workload is varied so you get to go to different places and meet lots of new people.

“The whole day has been a great experience. I will definitely consider a career in property but I’m interested to learn about the development side of the industry too.”

Jason adds: “It was great to give Alex a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at our business; he asked insightful, sensible questions, and showed real curiosity and confidence. The future for the commercial property sector certainly looks bright!”
